Kajiado North - July 2026
The Baraka group began with conversations between caregivers and church leaders in Oloolua and Umoja. Families spoke about financial pressure, disability and the support they needed. Oloolua Faith Network invited a counsellor to help leaders and caregivers understand different forms of disability and discuss how churches could include people more fully in community life.
World Relief introduced Savings for Life, and Baraka PWD and Caregivers formed its savings group in 2025. Members had previously saved KES 38,000 over seven years in an earlier group. By July 2026, the new group’s 26 members had accumulated more than KES 400,000 in less than a year and were preparing their first share-out. Members were running businesses, paying school fees and meeting household expenses. The group also registered as a community-based organisation to advocate for disability inclusion and help members access public services.
Members meet twice a month and support one another through visits and contributions when a family faces a loss. On 17 July 2026, they took food and clothing to a household outside the group caring for a person with a disability. They had also established an apiary with 15 beehives on donated land in Kahara. At the time of the story, they had applied to the county government for another 25 hives. Further expansion and exchange visits were still plans. “Today, we are productive, respected, and able to support our families,” said Dixon, the group’s chairperson.
